Welcome to our blog and all things Bolonka.

Enjoy your visit; I am certain that after you have acquainted yourself with these lovely dogs you too will agree that the "Royal Lapdog of Color" are truly one of the finer things in life.... or as we refer to them. "Treasures".

The Breed

(visit our website Bolonka Treasures for more information about this breed)

If you love the elegant refinement of a maltese or the gentle intelligence of the havanese...perhaps you will find the bolonka to be a contender in your search for the perfect pet.  For some the maintenance of the pristine all white coated breeds prove to be too much and breeds such as the havanese just a tad too large.  In walks the bolonka!  Elegant and chic...small and intelligent...and a colored coat  with a wave/curl that masks the grooming challenges many encounter.

A beauty...specifically bred to sit on your lap or carry in your arms...and always appearing well kept and chic.

The Russian elite who developed this darling dog designed a chic lapdog of their own; elegant and small...quiet and intelligent (small dogs were not allowed during a period of russian history) with a wavy colored coat to minimize the appearance of tearing or dirt.

Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is literally translated to mean “colored lapdog”. It is a bichon based breed accepted in every color except white. They are a small sturdy dog with an allergy friendly long coat and lively personality.  A true “companion” pet that is small in size making them easy to house in a small dwelling, convenient for traveling, and of course perfect for sitting in your lap. They are social butterflies and get along well with other pets and people.

Bolonkas are found in many countries around the globe and are often referred to by other names...however, the name "bolonka"  remains constant.

Here are some of the many names that the bolonka is known by:
  • Russkaya Tsvetnaya Bolonka (Russian)
  • Franzuskaya Bolonka (france)
  • French Bolonka
  • Bolonka Zwetna (German)
  • Deutscher Bolonka (German)
  • Barevny Bolonsky Psik (Czech)
  • Bolonka Cvetna
  • Bolonsky Psi Farebny (Slovakia)

The Bolonka was discovered after the fall of the iron curtain, but is believed to go as far back as the 18th Century when small dogs accompanied Napoleon's army to the Russian empire.
